General Astronomy

Microsoft's World Wide Telescope at http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/ runs on Silverlight, which does not work with web browsers running under linux.

Google Sky is an add-on to Google Earth, which will work with linux. Google Earth is available at http://www.google.com/earth/index.html, and Google Sky is available at http://www.google.com/sky/ and can be run in a web-browser.
A word of caution, however. The version 5 .deb file for Debian/Ubuntu linux does not seem to install on the latest distributions as of Ubuntu Maverick 10.10 and Debian Squeeze 6, so needs to be avoided. The googleearth-package in the repository needs to be installed, as well as any libraries that depends on. Because this downloads version 6 rather than the version 5 of Google Earth it was intended, it does not carry out the automatic install as intended; some libraries may not be present, and some of the scripts point to the wrong place. The way to install it involves downloading the package, and building it on the PC yourself. There are some instructions that walk through the installation process here:

http://www.webupd8.org/2010/11/install-google-earth-6-in-ubuntu-linux.html

This was the only way I could get Google Earth installed on Ubuntu 10.10, whereas in previous versions & distributions there had been no problems.

This is only possible because Google is open about its code.
